Treasury Consultation on Digital Platforms

The Treasury has launched a consultation on a proposed new digital competition regime.

The consultation is on a Proposal Paper and will run from 2 December 2024 - 14 February 2025.

The review site states:

“This paper outlines a new digital competition regime proposed by the government.

The regime aims to promote competition in digital platform markets. It will address conduct that:

  • is anti‑competitive

  • creates barriers to entry

  • exploits market power to harm Australian users of digital platform services.

The paper seeks views on the proposal, focusing on:

  • the framework and legislative approach – including in‑scope and priority services

  • the designation process – to make sure the regime is targeted

  • obligations for designated firms

  • enforcement and compliance mechanisms.“
